What is the fine for driving without a license in Mauritius?

Driving without licence has fine Rs 100, 000 in the Road Traffic Act. It is very unlikely to be enforced for a first time offender, this will, however, depend on the Court's Magistrate. For further information please consult the traffic offenders page .

What are the different types of driving licence in Mauritius?

Traffic Branch of the Mauritius Police Force isues the following driving licences:

1. Provisional Driving Licence - All leaners must apply for a PDL to be able to undergo all tests (theory and practical). For each class of vehicle an applicant must apply for a PDL first. For e.g: Private Car, Lorry, Bus, etc.

2. Competent Driving Licence - This is when you have successfully passed all the requirements to be awarded an unrestricted driving licence to drive on the territory of the Republic of Mauritius.

3. International Driving Permit - This is issued to whose who need to travel and drive overseas or a foreigner who needs to drive in Mauritius for more than 4 weeks. This driving permit is awarded for class of vehicles a driver is already competent for. This permit has an expiry date (1 year).

Do I need a license to drive a scooter in Mauritius?

Whether a scooter, conventional motorcycle or any two-wheeler, you will need a driving licence for that category of motorcycle . Exception are for electric motorcycle (or scooter) of 250w or below; for this type of two-wheeler no driving licence is required.

Can I drive in Mauritius with foreign driving license?

Yes. It is permitted to drive with foreign driving licence for a limited time (1 month) in Mauritius. If you wish to drive for a longer period of time, you must apply for an International Driving Permit and the application fee is Rs 800. The IDP has a validity of 1 year. An IDP is not valid for its citizens in its issuing country.

Where can I pay my traffic/police/court fines in Mauritius?

Traffic offenders will have to settle all fines at the Court's cashier within the specified time on the Fixed Penalty Notice, Court's judgment, or informed by the Court's usher. Can you turn left on a red traffic light in Mauritius?

A driver is allowed to turn left while a traffic light is showing RED in a limited number of traffic light control junctions. When this manoeuvre is authorised it is clearly affixed right underneath the traffic light. If there is no direction allowing you to do so, don't do it!

What is the legal age to drive in Mauritius?

It is legal to apply for a provisional driving licence for private car at the age of 18. At the age of 15, a teenager may apply for a provisional driving licence for Autocycle (engine below 50cc).
